About the Feria Modelo
If you’re looking for fresh, quality products, and the possibility to choose and receive advice from the sellers, the feria (fair or market) is the place to go. I’m lucky to have one around the corner of where I live. The Feria Modelo. The fair started in 1956. The market has been built on lands donated by the heirs of Jose Hernandez, because he was owner of a large house there in 1875 . During the feria’s best moments, there were 84 stands, nowadays only 30 survive. The market remains almost the same as it was when it was founded.

As Fodor’s review wrote: One of the last surviving European-style indoor food markets in town, the Feria Modelo is a gourmet’s dream. The building has stood more or less unchanged since 1891, and its 30 stalls are the ideal place to ogle top national produce like Patagonian trout and lamb, porcini mushrooms, and stuffed meats. The cheese stalls sell creamy ricotta by the kilo and chunky wheels of queso Mar del Plata, an eminently snackable Gouda-style cheese.

As SaltShaker reviewed: A large indoor market with multiple shops. The largest shop is Valenti, a cheese and cured meats purveyor with an outstanding selection of imported varieties of both (a “chain” with other locations in the city as well). There are close to a dozen small butcher shops with various specialties, including one that stocks difficult to find meats like vizcuna, cuy, and armadillo; and a couple of poultry suppliers with a wide variety of birds. There are also some excellent fruit and vegetable stands
