About El Cabildo

Bloged in Facts of Buenos Aires by k_aggery Wednesday December 13, 2006

After the ‘must-be-seen’ icons of Buenos Aires, we keep going to reach another ‘must-be-seen’ symbol: El Cabildo de Buenos Aires. The Buenos Aires Cabildo was the public building in Buenos Aires that was used as government house during the colonial times. Restored in 1949, the original 1725-1785 construction – which replaced a 1610 building – was the seat of Spanish colonial power. The tower is smaller than the original, as is the building itself, in general, which used to take up the entire west side of the Plaza de Mayo. Today, the building holds the National Museum of Buenos Aires Cabildo and May Revolution, which is opened Tuesdays to Fridays from 10.30 am to 5 pm, and Sundays from 11.30 am to 6 pm.

Location: Bolívar 65, in front of Plaza de Mayo. As a reminder, the Obelisk, Casa Rosada and the Cabildo are located in the same area, Montserrat, except for the Obelisk located a little further west.
